되는 로봇으로 시술자의 손처럼 움직여 마치 환부를 열고 시술자가 직접 시술
하는 것과 같이 수술하는 로봇입니다.
이는 시술자에게 좌우반전 없이 10배~15배 확대된 입체영상을 전달하고 시술
자의 움직임을 정교하게 5mm~8mm작은 로봇 팔에 전달함으로써 기존의 매우
어렵거나 불가능 하였던 다빈치의 사용은 미국와 유럽의 거의 모든 우수한 대
학병원과 수련병원에 사용하고 있을 정도로 이미 보편화 되어 있습니다.

다빈치라고 하면 많은 사람들이 르네상스 시대의 위대한 예술가 레오나르도 다빈치를 떠올릴 것이다. 하지만 로봇에 관심 있는 이라면 미국의 Intuitive Surgical사가 개발한 수술용 로봇도 함께 연상하지 않을까.

다빈치는 복부 내시경을 이용해 전립선암, 위암 등을 수술하는 로봇이다. 이를 이용하면 보통 4~5시간 걸리는 수술을 2시간 이내에 끝낼 수 있다. 따라서 의사는 그만큼 덜 피로하게 돼 집중력을 한층 향상시킬 수 있다. 또 복부 내시경을 통해 수술하는 만큼 절개부위가 최소화돼 출혈이 적고 수술 후 통증 및 감염 위험도 감소한다.

다빈치 로봇은 종이학을 자연스럽게 접을 정도로 정교함을 자랑한다.

 

다빈치는 지난 2000년 미 식품의약국(FDA) 승인을 받은 이후 지금까지 전 세계적으로 총 1171대가 팔려 나갔고 2008년 말 기준 누적 수술건수는 13만6000여 건에 달한다.   우리나라에서도 세브란스 등 대형 종합병원들이 이 로봇을 들여와 실제 수술에 활용하고 있다.

다빈치 이외의 수술로봇들도 환자 치료에 적극 활용되고 있다. 미국 ISS사가 개발한 로보닥(Robodoc)은 정형외과 수술에 사용되는 로봇. 무릎관절이나 고관절에 인공관절을 삽입할 경우 인공관절이 들어갈 부분의 뼈를 자동을 깎는 기능을 갖고 있다. 지난해 7월 미 FDA 승인을 받았고 지금까지 전 세계 59개 병원에 판매됐다.

미국 Mako Surgical사의 수술로봇 마코플래스티(MakoPlasty) 역시 정형외과에서 무릎관절에 인공관절을 삽입할 때 뼈의 일부를 자동으로 깎는 로봇이다. 현재까지 미국 내에서 21대가 팔려 나갔다.

이처럼 수술로봇은 전 세계적으로 크게 각광받고 있다. 수술 정밀도가 높고 수술예후가 좋아 그만큼 수요가 급증하고 있는 것이다. 특히 고령화가 가속화되면서 인공관절수술을 받는 환자가 크게 늘고 있어 정형외과용 수술로봇은 더욱 좋은 반응을 얻을 것으로 보인다.

2008년 현재 전 세계 의료로봇 시장규모는 28억8300만 달러이며 오는 2013년에는 73억4900만 달러까지 성장할 것으로 전망된다. 국내 수술로봇시장은 2008년 기준 920억원 규모로 전년대비 50.8%나 성장했다. 하지만 국내에서 사용하는 로봇은 전량 해외에서 수입한다.

수술로봇의 국산화가 절실한 이유다. 이에 따라 지식경제부는 총 53억여원의 사업비를 들여 인공관절수술로봇을 국산화하는 프로젝트에 착수했다. 여기에는 지난 2007년 자금난을 겪고 있던 미국의 ISS사를 인수해 인공관절수술로봇 관련 원천특허를 보유한 큐렉소와 현대중공업, 삼지전자, 삼성서울병원, 전남대, 이춘택병원 등이 참여하고 있다.

국산 인공관절수술로봇이 성공적으로 개발되면 전량 수입하고 있는 로봇을 국산화할 수 있어 수입대체효과가 클 것으로 기대되고 있다.

The LightScraper – Interactive Light Shines in the Night

If you’re interested in how art is going to get interactive, you must check out The LightScraper.

The LightScraper is a custom built aluminium structure fabricated with a layer or semi translucent mesh. By Electronic Miracles, the structure can be easily erected in various compositions in an outdoor or indoor setting.

How does it work? A single computer and two projectors are used to bring the visuals to life. The LightScraper also acts as a giant musical instrument, people’s location influence the melodies emitting form the sculpture. Wonder what it can do with some electronica! (Justice would be sweet!)

Visitors position are tracked via an Infrared camera mounted at the peak of the structure, and transposed into musical notes, the result is ever-changing melodies and visual delight. Talk about beautiful art that shines in the night!

I just read two articles pointing me to the website of ENESS – it’s an Australian design firm specializing in interactive art installations.  For this year’s Rainbow Serpent Festival, ENESS created the LightScraper – a pyramidal, video, sound, and light masterpiece that gives the beholder a unique perspective on the art.

The LightScraper is a towering vortex of visuals and sound feeding off its surroundings. Featuring real-time 3D graphics and a human motion tracking system, the LightScraper explores new forms of engagement with technology and ultimately each other, the closer we go the higher the glow, enjoy.

Dexia Tower: An Exercise in Interactive Architecture

Think you can’t find beauty in a bank? Think again. The Dexia Tower, located in Brussels, embodies just that. Thanks to the creativity of LAb[au], a Belgium based digital design lab, the Dexia Tower has become infinitely more than just a home for paperwork and numbers.

The tower itself went up in 2006, and since then has been host to a variety of fantastic light shows. The third tallest building in Brussels has a lot more going for it than just height, however: Of the building’s 6000 windows, 4200 of them contain an installation of 12 light bulbs, each housing 3 LED’s (a green, blue and red) that can be combined to form a complete palette of color. The result is a tremendous canvas that can display anything from letters to geometric designs. Seem wasteful? It isn’t –recent tests show that the tower uses 1/3 of the electricity that Paris’ famed Eiffel Tower uses, thanks to a highly efficient energy saving LED lighting system.

To create this effect, all blinds must be closed on the tower, as the LEDs are not capable of lighting the facade alone. It is actually the reflection on the closed blind that lights up the window. The entire lighting system is controlled by a computer. The key to making the entire display flow is that some things are only visible when certain windows are lit in certain colors. Each of the windows can be illuminated completely individually and in any color, which is a large part of what makes the Dexia Tower so brilliant.

In 2006, the Dexia Tower hosted another dynamic exhibit called Touch. Called an “interactive light game” and developed by LAb[au], this feature allowed visitors to use a touch screen to project geometrical shapes on the tower fora few moments and then send the image of their personalized design to themselves via email. The exhibit earned the tower tremendous recognition and it was mentioned on hundreds of websites thereafter.

Cherry Blossom was designed for the Cooper-Hewitt ?Äôs National Design Triennial to activate the Grand Staircase of the historic Carnegie Mansion and get museum visitors to use the staircase to see the upstairs galleries. The presence and movement of visitors on the staircase triggers animated cherry blossoms projected onto a two-story high semi-cylinder in the center of the staircase. When someone walks on the stairs, each step triggers the projection of a ring of swirling cherry blossoms, relative to that step, accompanied by a sound effect. The more people there are on the staircase, the more blossoms get triggered.

BIX Media Facade

BIX Media Facade

The BIX Light and Media Façade on the Kunsthaus Graz has been designed by the Berlin artists and architects from realities:united and has been added to MoMA’s collection (Museum of Modern Art).

This concept idea of this new BIX is to program the façade like a computer monitor and to broadcast projections, animations, or messages into the urban space. The conceptual highlights are circular fluorescent lamps, arranged on a vast scale.

 

 

The Berlin designers realities:united have initiated and developed the concept BIX. They created a unique fusion between architecture and media technology with the light and media facade BIX designed for the Kunsthaus Graz.

Zeilgalerie

The redesign of the Zeilgalerie shopping centre, which opened in 1992 and is renowned far beyond Frankfurt’s city limits, includes a completely new look for the façade and a full makeover of the public areas inside the complex. Due to the paramount significance of the front of the building in terms of typology and how it fits into the urban setting, 3deluxe’s design concept focuses closely on the architectural surface and its deepening in content, structure and materials. As it is the only exterior view of the complex that is enclosed on three sides, the façade facing out onto the Zeil shopping mall is therefore representative of the entire architecture – the perception of shape gets reduced to the perception of space. The building’s use as a self-enclosed and experience-oriented consumer world means that the façade can be completely disconnected from the building’s interior, thus permitting the creation of an independent design concept for this section.

In its function as brand architecture, the Zeilgalerie’s appearance must be able to reflect lifestyle and design trends alike. Here, architecture, which in principle tends to focus on constancy, approximates the dynamic processes of change in fashion and product design. Lighting effects based on complex computer programming help change Zeilgalerie’s look and with the ambiguity involved allows for personal interpretation and identification. Several façade levels of varying designs create intriguing layered effects as well as a visual impression of depth.

Façade design

The new façade design gives Zeilgalerie a modern and unique appearance that stands out decisively from the architecture of the surrounding department stores. The façade’s unusual black and white colours, its filigree ornamentation and the integrative interaction of architecture, graphic design and light orchestration will create a distinctive character for the building on Zeil.

As a reference point to the existing architecture – designed by Darmstadt-based architects Kramm & Strigl as a stylistic mix of constructive modernity and post-modernity – the building’s characteristic tripartite structure has been preserved. However, an overarching colour scheme and connective architectural elements now combine the three single structures into one visual unit. The façade now features a more uniform look compared to the many parts from which it was formerly composed, thus communicates spaciousness and prestige, corresponding to the building’s use as an exclusive shopping centre.

The existing glass façade of the semi-cylindrical structure on the left is clad with horizontally arranged strips of curved matt-black aluminium panels. Viewed as a whole, they form an aesthetically appealing pattern of lines that, thanks to its irregular layout and the different strip widths, conceals the distances between floor levels. This creates a striking appearance, which is furthermore intensified by the use of dynamic lighting. Moreover, filigree metal ornaments and Alucobond panels screen printed with white dots enhance the design’s complexity.

The glass front of the central structure, which houses the shopping centre’s vertical development, is coated with a transparent printed film. The subtly visible motif is a graphic artwork depicting the location’s urban feel. It turns the glass surface into an imaginary space that evokes inspirational discoveries. The daylight penetrating the film projects the latter’s colours onto the interior, thereby painting interesting light patterns in the lounge areas adjacent to the façade.

The existing façade of the structure on the right, which is composed of multiply folded perforated sheet metal that originally concealed a kinetic light sculpture, will be replaced with smooth cladding made of matt-black aluminium panels and varnished glass. Here, the Alucobond sheets, which equally feature in the left structure of the complex, are not printed but laser-perforated in the same pattern as well as backlit. The renovation concept takes up the original idea of an interactive computer-controlled façade by providing a technologically and artistically innovative media installation at this point.

Light orchestration of the façade

Made up of several levels, the media installation envelops the right structure’s entire façade with a softly pulsating system of ornamental light. A rectangular surface made of doubleglazed glass and measuring approx 260 sq. m. is mounted flush with the Alucobond panels. Behind it, there is a rhombus-shaped grid composed of 310 LED strips. Each of the overall 13,700 light diodes can be controlled separately, thus allowing for a large variety of aesthetic light images: Clear-cut, geometrical patterns flow into the seemingly organic interplay of light and shadow; delicate linear accents alternate with striking, large-scale effects. The LED grid is omitted in the black finish of the rear glass pane, allowing light in the form of sharp-edged lines to emerge. These light diagonals are in turn superimposed by an orthogonal graphic that is printed onto the transparent film between the glass panes. Moreover, from time to time on the surrounding façade areas the dot screen flashes up, providing a visual continuation of the convex structure on the left. On the right-hand side of the building, this pattern has been laser-cut into the cladding sheets, enabling the light from the approx. 2,500 LED modules installed behind it to shine through. The varying interplay of the different design levels makes for a fascinating complexity and atmospheric intensity.

Correspondingly, the cylindrical tower is also illuminated with light: Horizontal lines of light flow softly along the façade strip’s lower edges. In darkness, the building’s tripartite structure is more pronounced – its ensemble character is deliberately emphasized by the illumination. The Zeilgalerie’s light orchestration is to be understood as an artistic and abstract realisation of illuminated advertising, which has long been an inherent part of the architecture of commercial buildings. However, rather than concrete advertising slogans it conveys the urban vibrancy of the location and translates it into atmospheric light images.

Electrabel Power Station

Every morning and evening, Magic Monkey’s living architecture project for Electrabel’s Power Station in Drogenbos, Belgium comes alive. Thousands of people driving by the power station every day are treated to a visual feast of color in motion.

Since December 9, 2005, the massive tower has been illuminated via the unique corseted design and placement of 8,032 individually controllable RGB LED pixels within Element Labs half-meter Versa TUBEs . With 57 light lines, the dynamic lighting has become an integral part of the tower’s architecture.

Magic Monkey has created a sophisticated animation around the cooling tower by operating each LED separately and adjusting the intensity. This allows them to create all the colors of the rainbow – and to change the colors up to 30 times per second. For control, the company is using 2 Element Labs Versa Drive D2 processors and an Apple Computer Mac mini with Element Labs Versatility software for playback.

 

En 2005 el equipo de trabajo Magic Monkey junto a la tecnología lumínica de Element LAB diseñó una innovadora plataforma de comunicación, a través de un enorme lienzo útil como pantalla sobre la enorme torre de concreto de 103 mts. de altura, propiedad de la compañía Belga Electrabel, transformando de esta forma la piel de la estructura que fue diseñada en 1959 por los arquitectos Hugo Van Kuyck and Léon Stynen.

Esta gran construcción fue cubierta con 8,032 LED´s RGB tipo VERSA que forman 57 líneas presentes en el contorno de la estructura. En el centro de la superficie esta aplicación se asentuó doblemente para crear una pantalla con 4,032 LED´s repartidos en los 21 mts de altura. Toda esta tecnología tiene la posibilidad de controlarse de manera individual para con esto crear un discurso visual dinámico en la superficie de la estructura.

Con esta plataforma visual Magic Monkey posibilitó la creación de un sofisticado concepto de animación usando cada LED de alta intensidad inscrito en la superficie. Creando imagines de baja resolución que sin embargo viéndose a una distancia considerable es capaz de componer un grafico entendible. Pero no todo es imágenes, la “pantalla” se expresa también a través de cambios lumínicos en los que integra el color de un arco iris con ya ayuda de un ordenador que se encarga procesar toda la información junto a los Versa Drive D2 de Element LABS.

En este proyecto podemos ver como Magic Monkey ha logrado dar un nuevo sentido de entendimiento a este lugar rechazado por muchos al considerarlo una preocupación para la salud de los asentamientos humanos emplazados en la cercanía de la Central de Fuerza. Sin embargo, este acento lumínico de alguna manera cambió la visión y percepción de este gran monolito.

As specialists in interactive monumental communication, Magic Monkey is well versed in unique and innovative designs, large projects and infrastructures and state-of-the art technological applications. So not only did Magic Monkey came up with the vision for the tower, the company spent months handling all of the project management from the initial planning to the electrical installation to the creation and maintenance of the visual content. Their “vertical technicians” rappelled down the tower and drilled holes into the concrete for the brackets that hold the TUBEs, and ran all the cables.

Magic Monkey has created a sophisticated animation around the cooling tower by operating each LED separately and adjusting the intensity. The cooling tower is the third Magic Monkey collaboration with Electrabel that features products from Elements Labs. Electrabel is part of the Suez group, one of Europe’s largest energy producer and distributor, so as a way of interacting directly with their customers, the company commissioned Magic Monkey who defined and created a Living Architecture theme. Its Antwerp headquarters has a staircase with a glass façade, where Magic Monkey positioned four rows of 21 Versa TUBEs each behind the glass.

Four parallel lines of light in constant movement within the stairwell give a contemporary aspect to the high-rise office block designed in 1959 by the architects Hugo Van Kuyck and Léon Stynen. The display is 21 meters high and is made up of 4,032 LEDs.
